Bite #18,Testimony of Dwight and Hallie Snyder:
Hallie Snyder was alone in her home in Oakland, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, with her 5 year old daughter on February 20,1980. She had just sent her 9 year old son off to school. Her husband Dwight was working in his small cabinet shop next to their home. At 9 AM someone knocked on the door of the Snyder residence. As Hallie Snyder walked across the living room toward the door, it was flung open by a man carrying a high powered automatic rifle. (5 year old daughter must have been horrified too) Eight men, all heavily armed, burst into the room with weapons pointed and ready to fire.
Next door James Dwight Snyder was busy at his saw cutting out a set of custom made cabinets. He heard the door to his shop swing open (crime of breaking and entering) and turned his head instinctively. FREEZE! someone shouted! Snyder looked down at the floor in front of the entry of his shop. Several men carrying M16s and submachine guns lay in the prone position with their weapons aimed at Snyder.
Outside in front of Snyder’s shop state policemen had blocked off the road. Federal Marshals and IRS special agents armed with M16s had surrounded the Snyder property. More than 30 men had just captured the unarmed Snyder family. Dwight Snyder is no criminal. He has no criminal record. He no his wife have never been arrested for any crime. In fact, the IRS agents who attacked Snyder and his family knew this!
The Internal Revenue Service had not come to arrest Snyder but to seize his property for his alleged failure to pay income taxes in 1971-72. Whether or not Snyder actually owes the money IRS claimed has not been decided. At the time of this writing (1984) Snyder has 2 cases against the IRS pending in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Snyders had no idea that the IRS was going to grab their property. About 10 of the IRS agents began tagging household goods; equipment in Snyder’s work shop; his vehicle, tractor and numerous other items belonging to Snyder. Twenty remaining troopers prevented Snyder and his wife from interfering while the IRS seized their property. That very afternoon the IRS brought in a moving van and hauled away the Snyder family’s possessions.
All of this was done without a search warrant and an ongoing court trial. The Snyder case dramatically demonstrates the police state power and mentality of the Internal Revenue Service. An IRS official in Baltimore was asked why the IRS sends in more than 30 armed men? His weird explanation was: “When resistance is anticipated steps are taken to ensure the safety of our IRS officials!”
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE LIBERTY, SAFETY, AND WELL BEING OF THE AMERICAN CITIZEN WHO PAYS DEARLY FOR THAT LIBERTY! ????????????????
